Rachel Spradley-Gavin was raised near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The oldest of three children, Rachel began following Christ as a freshman at The University of Louisiana Lafayette through the influence of friends in Chi Alpha. She graduated with a B.A. in English and Creative Writing in 1999. Previously she served as a Campus Missionary in Training and then as an associate staff member with Chi Alpha at Western Washington University from 1999 until 2006. Rachel loves mentoring young women and helping students integrate their faith into their careers, studies, and daily life. Rachel enjoys a good book, coffee with friends, hiking, and biking.
Joe Gavin, a native of New York, studied clarinet performance at The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. It was here that Joe began following Christ through the influence and ministry of Chi Alpha. Joe also served as a Campus Missionary in Training and an associate staff member with Chi Alpha at Western Washington University from 2000 until 2006. Joe is an avid runner and has completed 4 marathons and an ultra-marathon. He also enjoys biking and backpacking. Despite being called into enemy territory (a.k.a. ‘Red Sox Nation’) he has remained loyal to his beloved New York Yankees.
After several years of working together with Chi Alpha in Bellingham, WA, Joe and Rachel had their romantic ‘blinders’ removed and began dating. They were married in April of 2006. They are expecting their first child, a daughter, in December.
Joe and Rachel moved to Burlington, VT to pioneer Chi Alpha at The University of Vermont (UVM) and several smaller area campuses. The fall of 2008 marked their official launch at UVM. Please pray for many students to experience the grace and life of Jesus. Pray for students to catch a vision for impacting their world for Christ. Pray that Joe and Rachel will continue to cultivate a wonderful marriage and home for their daughter.
